How to secure your Google Mail account with its autheticator app feature: Give it a try
Every one has at least one gmail account for their personal use or for their some work specific use, its doesn't matter. But the fact is, every one has at least one Google mail account. Just imagine, what will happen, when you lost the access of your own gmail account and loose all your data and information that is very crucial for you.
But you may think, this is not possible.! No one can hack gmail.! Yeah.! you may be right, but what if you have told your password to someone who should not be known of your account credentials. Of course, in this situation you may loose your data. Well.. this is frustrating.! Yeah, it is.! :)
So, to avoid this type of situation, google provides two-step verification for your account to keep it more secure not just with password but also by the security code. Yeah, you're right. I'm talking about the random numbers that you get as OTP(one time password) to verify your account. Yeah, I know sometimes it takes time to reach to your phone. But this is the most secure way to secure your account.
But you don't need to worry about receiving the OPT on your phone, because now google has an app that generates the codes for your account on your smart phone. It is called "Authenticator App". It runs on Android, iPhone and blackberry devices.
You just need to install that app set up the Two-step authentication for your account to keep your gmail account safe from key loggers and password theft. When you will log in to your gmail account, it will ask for password and code as well at the same time to verify your authenticity. No one can login to your gmail account without your phone.
You can set up two factor authentication, but it require OTP on your phone, but you may be one of them who doesn't like to wait for OTP. So here is a solution for that-
You just need to install this authenticatior app to your mobile and get the code to login to your account. Well, you might be thinking that it need internet connection to generate codes.? Of course not.! It generates codes even you don't have internet on your mobile. It works offline completely and codes changes every after 30 seconds.
Next, click the Edit link to the right of 2-Step Verification in the Security section. You can start your here directly.
In this step, you will be asked various things as you can see easily in the image, you will also be asked to remember your computer to minimize the hassle of two-step authentication. When you choose to remember your computer you will allow for next 30 days and no need to enter the code.
And finally, at the last screen will activate two-step verification for your desired account and you will be forced to log back in after it.
After logging back in, you can see three option to choose your mobile device type. You can click on any one of them. After clicking, you will be redirected to desired destination to download the authenticator App and a new page will open.
The page provides instructions for downloading the Google Authenticator app on your device — on Android and iPhone, you can get it from the Market or App Store.
After launching the app, you will ask to scan bar code and scan the QR code from the page on your computer or click the “Can’t scan the barcode?” link on the page and use the Manually Add Account feature to type it in. Please remember, code will expire in next 30 minutes, so you have to enter the code within the time period. If in case your code has been expire, don't worry a new code will be generated automatically.
After it’s verified, click the “Save” button.
Google also offers you to download the backup codes. If you have lost your mobile application and backup phone number.
Print them out and keep them safe — you’ll be locked out of your Google account if you lose all three authentication methods.
The next time you sign in, you’ll have to provide the current code from your Google Authenticator app.
